About Jena

© Andreas Hub | JenaKultur

More than 25,000 students live and study in Jena, they define the pulsating life of the city with fresh ideas and a great deal of energy. The many cafés and cosy restaurants, small boutiques and modern shopping centers attract thousands of visitors to the city each day. The “pub mile” in the Wagnergasse has an almost magical appeal. Here you can experience Jena’s most attractive side: relaxed, friendly, open and multicultural.

Jena does not only offer everything within easy reach and well-functioning networks. Many companies appreciate the location particularly due to the close contact between research and industry. In the 19th century the physicist Ernst Abbe, the entrepreneur Carl Zeiss and the chemist Otto Schott wrote history with their interdisciplinary alliance. Companies such as JENOPTIK, Carl Zeiss and SCHOTT are indebted to this tradition. They continue to develop innovative high-tech products “Made in Jena” with precision and a high standard of quality.

Jena has been a place of learning and research since the foundation of the university in 1558 – a paradise for visionary thinkers. Today one in four inhabitants in Jena are students. Research is carried out at over 30 scientific institutions: including the Max-Planck, Leibniz and Fraunhofer institutes, the faculties of the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena, the largest university in Thuringia, the University Clinic and the Beutenberg Campus. An area of top-level research in the fields of optics and photonics along with life sciences and the humanities make Jena a city of the sciences.

Jena is amongst the most popular university locations in Central Germany and has an excellent reputation as a centre for high-technology. As the second largest city in Thuringia the city captivates its visitors at first glance thanks to its location in the picturesque countryside of the Saale Valley and excellent connections with important transport routes. The small city surprises visitors with its sights within easy reach, almost Mediterranean flair and an open, modern atmosphere.
